Block Parties

I don't know how others feel about these so called block parties during summer month's, but I do not look forward to them. Yesterday I found a notice on my front door, telling me to move my car by 9:am May 6th, cause there's gonna be a block party on that day from 8:am til 8:30pm. Ok, fine you want to have a party why not do it in your yard? Or in one of your neighbor's. I always thought a block party was that everyone got together, made all sorts of foods, set up tables together, had an area for dancing near the music table, an area designated to where the kids could ride their bikes or play games, an area to sit where everyone could talk and get to know each other. But this is how these neighbors of mine have a block party. They rope off both ends of the block, put a grill in their front yard and a stereo with the most awful language rap music, something that children should not be listening too. They don't talk to neighbors, and they let their kids ride their bikes in the street. To me that is an invitation for problems to arise. It's like your saying, go ahead kids ride your bike in the street! And May 6th I think is a little too early for this so called block party. Is'nt that a summer thing? Here's what I deal with during these dag on block parties. I have to keep my windows closed cause of all the music and bad language, and there's not just one stereo going, there's 10 or 15 going at same time blasting this awful music. People start their arguing, and cursing at each other because they've been drinking all day, then on occassions they fight. Two years ago a 17 year old boy was shot in the chest and killed right outside the front of my house. When did it happen? At one of these so called block parties. He was shot by a neighbors 15 yr old son, told to do so by his mother because her husband was in fight with this 17yr old boy father. He got in the way trying to break up the fight and was shot and killed instantly. You'd think these neighbors would of learned a valuable lesson from this, but they did'nt, the partying still goes on. Having a 4yr old daughter, I will not allow her to take part in any of this. I won't allow her to play in the street or hear the cursing and see the fighting and drinking going on, or listen to that so called rap music with all the cursing in it. Sorry but I care what goes on around my child, and I don't want to lose her, whether it be from a gunshot or a car running her over. She's the most precious gift from God, and I'll show him my thanks by keeping her safe!!!!

  1. My first thought is that you need to call the police at their NON emergency number today. You need to ask if a person needs a permit for a block party and tell them you have a notice saying there is one on the 6th and you want to know if its legal. You need to tell them you will be calling them repeatedly on the 6th if they dont police your neighborhood...i would remind them of the murder. In our city you have to get a permit that costs $. Can you go away for some of that time?! Let me know what happens.

  4. Amen sis! You know, speaking of block parties, that day we came to the reunion, on our way home we got lost LOL and wound up in a not-so-nice part of the city. We passed a block party that day, so I was witness to exactly what you're talking about. The police should ban that crap, it's nothing but trouble waiting to happen and people shouldn't have to deal with it.

  5. The block parties where I used to live were like you said about getting together and making all sorts of food and sharing, talking, laughing and getting to know your neighbor. I find it sad that people have block parties the way you describe it.  Have a wonderful Thursday.

  7. I'd definitely call the cops and be their worst nightmare.  Our Sheriff dept isn't so responsive so sometimes we have to call..and call....and CALL.
Good luck on the 6th. Let us know how it goes.
