AN Old Poem

While searching in boxes and drawers for the other kodak cd's I came across a poem that I wrote many many years ago. It has got to be at least 20 years ago that I wrote it. I had a friend who was really bad off on drugs. She lost her husband and her children due to the drug use. But in her mind, she thought everyone was out to get her. Thought people were just picking on her, and that her husband took the kids and left out of spite. In her mind she was doing nothing wrong, except having fun. Eventually her husband divorced her and was given full custody of their 2 boys. I seen him a few times out with the boys shopping, or at McDonald's having lunch. The last time I had seen him, he told me Lisa (friends name) had gotten even worse with her drug habit and she died 6 month's after their divorce from a drug overdose. He said the reason he left was his wife was spending all their money on drugs, staying out til all hours of the night, and neglecting the kids. He could'nt take it anymore and he wanted his boys to have better then that. Right after he left with the boys, Lisa called me and asked for money. I told her no. I told her to go to her husband, tell him what she is doing and get help. She hung up on me. She wanted that money for an abortion. Said the baby was'nt her husbands. She had a miscarriage a couple weeks later. But before that miscariage I was sitting in my back yard and I started a letter to her, but the letter turned into this poem, and I mailed her a copy. I never heard from her again.

ALONE IN A POTFIELD, ALL COVERED IN BUDS, THE STONED ADDICT LAY, ALL STRUNG OUT ON DRUGS, THE CRACKPIPES A SMOKING, AND SO IS THE BLUNT, HER POOR LITTLE CHILDREN, ALONE IN HER RUT. WHILE THE ADDICT IS NESTLED, ALL COZY AND HIGH, THOSE LITTLE CHILDREN, ASK WHY, MOMMY WHY? TO HER HUSBAND THE ADDICT, SHE ONLY REPLIED, LEAVE ME ALONE, AND I WON'T HAVE TO LIE.

HE PACKED UP THE KIDS, OUT THE DOOR HE WENT, NOT ONE NICKEL TO HER WAS EVER SENT. SHE LIED AND SHE CHEATED, SHE STAYED OUT ALL NIGHT, ALL THIS DONE IN THE CHILDREN'S SIGHT. NO HELP SHE SAUGHT, NO LESSON WAS TAUGHT, A DRUG ENDUCED HIGH, ONE THAT SHE BOUGHT.

I learned later in life that you can't help those, who don't want to help themselves. Most alcoholics and or drug addicts don't think they have a problem, and say, "I can stop anytime I want too." The sad part is none of them ever do, and eventually lose everything. It's sad to see, when these people have children, or if it's a child of your own who is doing it. But, all we can do is hope and pray it's not someone we love and care about doing this. And if there is someone, get them help, make them get help. Stand by them, go to meetings, doctor appointments, etc with them. Show them you love and care about them, and that's why your by their side. I've really ranted enough here, sorry for that. Guess I'll go now. Have a nice day all.

  1. Sometimes you have to stop standing by them............especially when they lie and steal from you..sometimes you just cannot take anymore of the pain of loving them. My daughter just went through this with a man she loved very much.........she finally had to stop watching him hurt himself and hurting her. He died three weeks ago from an overdose too. He had been at my house many times....I wrote about it in my journal. My poor daughter is still calling me crying. B. Lynne
